2011 was the second Oundle Food Festival, having been founded from a need to show what fabulous
food could be grown and sourced locally.
Once again we showcased the very best local seasonal produce and producers. The emphasis throughout the Festival was on showing that high quality produce can not only lower the environmental impact but also lower your food bills - we've called this The Low Food Revolution. There were around 45 market stalls with additonal covered areas for demonstrations, talks and workshops.
The market has its own buzz and energy, not only through its mix of stalls, providing great diversity and fresh quality produce, with opportunities to taste food as it really should be, and a chance to meet the people who grow, nurture and produce real food,
Despite the rain stallholders, musicians, demonstrators and the crowds turned up to support the Food Festival. The Great Food Magazine was there and will be producing a local loaf recipe created on the day with Dan Lepard, appearing in the Sepember issue of the magazine.
There were stalls in the Market Place from early in the morning with some staying until mid afternoon to take advantage of a break in the weather . Around 45 stallholders set out ther wares in the Market Place amid musicians and dancers who helped to create a fun, lively atmosphere, and children’s activities adding to the atmosphere. Stallholders will include Hambleton Bakery, Cup Cake Envy, Jollydale Cyder, Stamford Cheese Cellar, ice cream from Oundle Mill, Squisito, Smith's Smokery, Laurel Farm Herbs, Edible Ornamentals, Weston and Long, Foxtail Lilly, Kingsthorpe Farm, Pudding & Pie, Amps Fine Wines, cookery books from Oundle Bookshop, Normans, Sue Kirk Willow Baskets, Little Common Farm, Traidcraft, Phipps Honey, Watergull Orchards, Ginko, Duck Fat Roast Potatoes, Belleau Bridge Trout Farm, Manor Farm Drinks, Hay Meadow Farm Produce, Oundle Transition Town, Riverford Oganics, Lincolnshire Plum Bread, Gourmet Spices, Fosse Meadows Farm, The Fudge Factory, Lymn Bank Farm, Chapel Bar and Dining, Great Food Magazine, Lower Hope Farm, Montagu Hampers, The Jolly Pedlar. It poured down for most of the day but that didn’t dampen spirits or seem to have much impact on the numbers of food-lovers who visited Oundle Food Festival on July 16.
In addition to the 40 or stalls that set up shop in the Northamptonshire town’s market place (including a Great Food magazine stand), one of the many highlights of the day was Dan Lepard’s bakery demonstrations in the town hall, which were well attended.
“Absolutely brilliant,” said Sally Craven of Claybrooke Magna, Leicestershire, after watching the Guardian writer’s sourdough loaf making demo. “I’ve learnt so much and can’t wait to put what Dan showed me into action at home.”
There were also sausage making demonstrations by Alex Chambers of Squisito, sushi making lessons by Ginko Sushi and talks by several foodie luminaries, including Arthur Potts Dawson, founder of The People’s Supermarket.
Despite the weather, all the stall holders we spoke to did brisk trade and met lots of new customers.
Congratulations to Alison Newcomb, the woman behind the food festival, who has built a very special event – it is undoubtedly one of the best food festivals that the region has to offer. And thanks to the people of Oundle for braving the weather and supporting the local producers!
A full report from the day, along with a local loaf recipe by Dan Lepard, will appear in Issue 8 of Great Food Magazine, out on September 6.
In addition to organic eggs, and pork, they now sell fresh lamb and hogget jointed for your convenience.
